The archaeological site of Chellah, located in Rabat on the left bank of the Bou Regreg River, is an ancient Roman colony (Sala Colonia) that became a Merinid necropolis in the 13th–14th centuries. It features Roman ruins (temple, baths, streets) and Islamic ruins (mosque, mausoleums, Merinid walls) covering approximately 7 hectares. Classified as a historical monument and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Chellah has been restored and recently reopened to the public.
